 Sea water can be converted into pure water by the process of distillation.



There are two types of distillation, they are simple distillation and fractional distillation.


Simple distillation is the process in which a mixture of solids and liquids components are separated whereas

the mixture of two or more liquids separated by fractional distillation.


What is Distillation?

The liquid is converted into vapour if it is heated up to its boiling point the vapour thus obtained can be changed into liquid by cooling.

the liquid obtained by this process is pure. this process is called distillation. this method can be used for the purification of liquid, distillation refers to the selective boiling point and subsequent condensation of a component into a liquid mixture.

It is a separation technique that can be used to either increase the concentration of the particular component in the mixture or to obtain pure components from the mixture.

the process of distillation exploits the difference in the boiling points of the components in the liquid mixture by forcing one of them into a gaseous state.


it is important to note that distillation is not a chemical reaction that can be considered a of the physical separation process.

How to separate salt from seawater by distillation


Materials required :

round bottom flask, stand, thermometer, burner, tripod stand, wire gauze, measuring cylinder, condenser etc.


Procedure :

  1. take a clean flash and pour the sea water
  2.  into it.
  3. place the flask on the tripod stand and Clamp it using a stand.
  4. Fit the condenser to the flash is shown in the figure
  5. to manage the flow of the cold water inside the condenser
  6. water measuring cylinder just below the end of the condenser to collect distilled liquid.
  7. fit a thermometer to the mouth of the flask to measure temperature.
  8. now, get the flask with the spirit lamp and boil it.


Observation :

when we heat the water inside the flask it forms vapour which comes out through the side tube inside the water condenser water vapours get cold in the condenser and change into liquid water which is collected in the flask.after some time when we heated the whole water converted into paper, salt remains in the flask.


Conclusion :

first water is separated from the seawater. the obtained water is distilled water .distilled water is pure.
